Beautiful Catholic family Bible

The first eight books and the Book of Psalms from the Old Testament and the entire New Testament are in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine text; the remaining books are in the Challoner-Douay text

New York: John J. Crawley & Co., 1953

Imprimatur: Francis Cardinal Spellman 1953

What a find! Catholic Bible, with an added dedication page, stating that “This copy of the Gregorian Edition of the Holy Bible, God’s Inspired Word, was bound especially for Floyd Witteman & Family.” Some of the features of this Bible include:

* Full leather binding, decorated in gilt & black, with beveled boards and six raised bands on spine
* Illustrated (see photo #4 for an example)
* Decorative initials for each chapter. Photo #5 is an example of just a random page. The initial letter of each book has more intricate illumination–see photo #4 for the initial “I”
* Silk endpapers
* Color maps
* Three ribbon page markers
* All page edges gilt

Reading the Book with this style of binding and illuminated lettering really makes you feel connected with the history of the Bible and therefore of the Church. I love this copy, and hope it finds a good home!
