Second edition; rebound in modern leather; frontis map supplied in facsimile; large folding map at rear of vol. 2 is intact. Laid in is an original ALS (letter) from John Franklin, dated just before he left to be governor of Tasmania (1836). The letter is addressed to Mr. Edye, encouraging him to join the Royal Society, and apologizing for not being able to be his Proposer due to his imminent journey. He refers Edye on to Mr. Davis Gilbert, Mr. Guillemard and Throckmorton. John Edye did become a RS member. Franklin’s signature is his usual, a little faded from having been framed for a few decades. Small dampstain to bottom corner of rear endpapers, no notable foxing to pages; a few spots to map, letter is unevenly toned but VG. $1,250
