Bombs Over Brookingsby William McCashDuring World War II, a Japanese airplane launched from a submarine bombed Curry County in southern Oregon. Based on newly discovered documentation, this highly readable account details the dropping of the bombs, and the response of the Forest Service, the Army, and Civilian Defense. Also covered are the long-term effects of the bombings on U.S. military strategy. But the story doesn’t end there. Nobuo Fujita, the Japanese pilot who bombed Curry County, was invited to Brookings in 1962, and amid the controversy, a friendship was born. Fujita not only donated his samurai sword to the City of Brookings, but he also visited Brookings three more times. In addition, he hosted three Brookings-Harbor High School students in Japan. This book is the first account that covers this story in full.
