Browsers' Bookstore Newsletter for January, 2007

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

First of all, let me thank our customer & pal Bob Blancher for taking the time to buy a new Santa Claus hat for our Albany store. I had borrowed my daughter's hat to decorate the store, and someone stole the hat! Thanks for the Christmas spirit, Bob!

Secondly, I'm going to try a new thing with this newsletter. Many people tell us they are looking for a particular book, and we keep a list and keep our eyes peeled for the book. This month, I'm actually going to list a few of the books at the bottom of this newsletter that we're looking for. Check your shelves to see if you have any!!

NEW ARRIVALS

December saw some good collections including...

1. Fly fishing books. A very nice collection, with prices ranging from a few bucks to over $100. (Corvallis)
2. An interesting folklore and mythology collection. (Corvallis)
3. Half a dozen Foxtrot comic books. (Albany)
4. A good collection of Bible study and theological books. (Albany)
4.5 A large collection of Native American books (Albany)

Although not first editions, these early printings are still nice collectibles:

5. The Postman Always Rings Twice. James M. Cain. The first edition of this book is worth $1,000 or more, depending on its condition and whether or not it has the dust jacket. This is a third printing, in the same month as the first printing, $30.

6. Gone with the Wind. Margaret Mitchell. The first edition of this book is worth about the same as the Postman. We've sold a few early printings for $25-50, but this one is a bit higher, since it is the second printing, and in nicer condition than usual. $100.

And a few miscellaneous books of interest...

7. The Camp Followers' Guide. Niles Chignon. A fun and campy look at the coming of Camp -- "America's most thrilling new taste sensation." Can't remember the '60s too well? Here's a great little reminder. $4

8. Ten Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Years with Pogo. Walt Kelly. A hardcover Pogo book! First edition, lacks the DJ, some smoke odor. $35.

9. Greetings from Colorado. Marshall Sprague. I always enjoy these kinds of books. This book reproduces a collection of a few hundred vintage postcards in full color. This copy is signed by the author. $12.50

10. Scoop. Evelyn Waugh. An uncommon Waugh book. 1st edition, good condition sans dust jacket. $25.

11. Songs of Gods, Songs of Humans: The Epic Tradition of the Ainu. Donald L. Philippi, foreword by Gary Snyder. 1st edition in slipcase. An awesome book! Translations of the epic poetry of the Ainu. $75.

12. The Legend of the Palm Tree. Paulo Werneck & Margarida Estrela Bandeira Duarte. An award-winning and popular children's book in Brazil. Acording to the preface, in 1939, the U.S. and Brazil "traded" great books with each other -- the U.S. publishers exhibited several of what they considered to be their outstanding books in Brazil, and the Brazilian government allowed Grosset & Dunlap to publish for Americans this book. Whatever the history, the book is beautifully illustrated and tells the legend of a young Indian boy who learns the uses of the palm tree. $15

13. Two neat beekeeping books: The Hive & the Honey Bee by Joe Graham, $25; Honey Bees & Beekeeping by Deith Delaplane $15.

14. Knife & Tomahawk Throwing: The Art of the Experts. Harry K. McEvoy. A kind of creepy photo of the author smirking and holding a tomahawk on the front cover is just the beginning of how cool this book is. There are delightfully gruesome stories about killing German soldiers and animals with knives; interesting stories about carnival knife throwers (including truly frightening pictures of their beautiful assistants surrounding by successfully thrown knives); and details on proper techniques and weapons. All this for only $6.50, what a deal!

15. Cowboys Out Our Way. J. R. Williams, intro by J. Frank Dobie. A collection of cowboy cartoons from the 1930s and 40s by the late great J. R. Williams, who is mentioned as one of a few prime sources of information on the cowboy life by popular author Larry McMurtry, and as a source of inspiration by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. His comic "Out Our Way" was syndicated in up to 700 newspapers -- quite a bit for those days. $35.
