Browsers' Bookstore Newsletter for February, 2007ACTUAL NEWS... IN A NEWSLETTER?? Mark your calendars! A few upcoming events for book lovers... First, Browsers' Bookstore in conjunction with To Topos: Poetry International is hosting a poetry reading featuring Allison Adele Hedge Coke, Charles Goodrich, Rick Borsten, and Karen Holmberg on Feb. 24th at 3:00 PM at our Albany store. We will have a fun time, free snacks, and of course, some great poetry! Second, the Friends of the Corvallis Public Library is having its annual book sale that same weekend on Feb 23-25 at the Benton County Fairgrounds. There are few better local causes, so be sure to get some books and show your support for the Library! Our Corvallis store has made a huge effort to reorganize and expand the general fiction paperbacks. If you can't find the author you are accustomed to finding, feel free to ask us for help. NEW ARRIVALS A few books for those of you interested in Oregon history: The River of the West: The Adventures of Joe Meek, Vol. 2: The Oregon Years. Frances Fuller Victor. The best biography of the famous trapper, this volume covers his later years including his time as sheriff and legislator. Awesome DJ blurb calls these "Meek's pungent recollections." Someday, I want my recollections to be described as "pungent." Heck, I'd even settle for "mildly odiferous!" $20 The Cayuse War: The Indian Wars of Oregon, Vol. 1. Frances Fuller Victor. Same author! This book has been out of print for over 100 years, yet remains the best book on the subject. (Just like the above book. Victor was a good writer and thorough researcher.) This reprint was published by ourselves, believe it or not, with a brilliantly insightful new one-page introduction. But seriously, the book itself is very good, and it includes muster rolls of the Cayuse War, notes, and a few illustrations. $18.95. Emigrant Names 2. Not a book - a database! We are stocking this software for the Oregon-California Trails Association. It is a searchable database of 70,000 names from over 3,200 Trail-related diaries, letters and articles. But what's even better is that you can even pull up a picture of the original document in which the name appears. Great for genealogy or Trail research and a super bargain at only $39.95. 2 CDs, Windows 98 or higher. And some other interesting books include: Three books on spiritualism by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The New Revelation, The Vital Message, The Wanderings of a Spiritualist. I love Doyle because he hated Sherlock Holmes - the only writing that Doyle is remembered for now! These books on spiritualism were written after the death of his son. $7.50-$12.00 The Authentic American Johnboat: How to Build It, How to Use It. Larry Dablemont. Get out your hammer and saw, it's Ozark boat building time! I've always wanted to build my own boat, but the closest I've come is blowing up an inflatable raft. In their defense, I must admit that inflatable rafts are one of the greatest inventions since movable type. People always talk about TV being a great invention, but tell me truly - on a hot summer afternoon, wouldn't you rather be floating down the river on an inflatable raft than watching Brady Bunch reruns? I digress. If you are looking for a good summer project, this is the book for you. $7.50 The Imitation of Christ. Thomas a Kempis. A very nice edition of this classic; a pleasure to read. The book contains small tipped-in color paintings; interestingly enough the plates of the paintings were destroyed by German bombings (this is a 1945 printing and the plates were in Holland.) $20 Scouting for Rural Boys: A Manual for Leaders. 1938, Boy Scouts of America. A great find for any Scout collector, very nice condition. $25. Some good art books this month: The Knave of Hearts. Maxfield Parrish & Louise Saunders. 1925, 1st edition. A beautiful book by this much sought-after artist (oh, are there words, too?) As a young illustrator, Parrish once approached the great Howard Pyle for instruction, who informed him that there was nothing he (Pyle) could teach him. This book was one of the last Parrish illustrated. For those of you interested, someone has put the entire book (text and illustrations) online. Probably a blatant infringement of copyright laws, but . . . http://www.theknaveofhearts.com/. $1,000. Pictures of Natural History. 1870, T. Nelson & Sons. Beautiful color plates decorate this children's book. Each chapter tells a little natural history and sometimes a true-adventure story about animals like lions, zebras, St. Bernard dogs, swans, etc. Next time you're in the Corvallis store, be sure to ask to see this book, as the plates really are outstanding. $60. The Book of Ruth. Woodcuts by Jacob Steinhardt, calligraphy by Franzisca Baruch, 1957. Although I'm usually a fan of woodcuts, in this case I'm more impressed by the calligraphy. I can't believe anyone has the patience to write as neatly as this. $25. The Diverting History of John Gilpin. William Cowper & Ralph Caldecott. A nice copy from 1925 with a great color paste-down on the front cover. Great condition, $15. WANTS LIST By popular demand, we will continue our books wanted list. If you have these, bring them in! Here's a few from the past couple of weeks: 1. The Innocent Man. Grisham2. People of the Mask. Gear. 3. Wizard's First Rule 1st ed. Goodkind. 4. Expedition! Dana Fuller Ross. 5. If Chins Could Kill. Bruce Campbell 6. Cross. Patterson. 8. Nora Roberts: The Winning Hand, Waiting for Nick 9. Traveling through the Dark: William Stafford. 10. Brambly Hedge series. Barklem 11. Gemmell: Wolf in Shadow, Last Sword of Power 12. Gluten Free Baker Bakes Bread. MISCELLANY Remember to visit our Albany store on the 24th for the poetry reading! Oh, I almost forgot my capitalist's duty to urge you to spend lots of money for Valentine's Day: Spend! Spend! Spend! Browsing through an old book on horoscopes I see that had I been born 100 years ago, my four professions of choice would have been: Magnetic Healer, Metaphysician, Psychometrist, or Clerk. Magnetic healing must be a cool job, but I think I prefer peddling books. Until next month, enjoy your books, Scott Givens Browsers' Bookstore 121 NW 4th St. Corvallis, OR 97330 1425 Pacific Blvd. SE Albany, OR 97321 www.browsersbookstore.com info@browsersbookstore.com
