Browsers' Bookstore Newsletter for July, 2007

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Both stores will be closed on the 4th of July while we launch rockets at all our competitors' stores.

The theme for this newsletter is: news that's not about books.

We sold the piano in our Corvallis store, but if anyone is looking for a VERY affordable (read: buy me a chai tea latte and I'm happy) one, I've got a homely piano in the Albany store.

Speaking of music, we're organizing the CDs we've haphazardly accumulated over the past several years. Both stores will have a small selection for sale, generally $3-6. We're also buying some music CDs, especially classical. The only thing is: we are going to be as strict with condition as we are on the DVDs -- they need to be scratch-free.

SUMMER READING PLAN

Okay, this is partly about books. Just for fun, or for those of you who want to get a jump on upcoming movies, check out these movies-based-on-books that are currently in production. Be sure to read the book first!!

Spiderwick Chronicles. This popular chapter book series will be released on film in 2008.
Paradise Lost. Yes, Milton's great poem is to be released in 2009 as a film.
Decameron. Another classic, this one will be released as Virgin Territory. Written by, directed by, and co-starring David Leland who has had a long career in British film, the low point of which must have been his role as "First Policeman" in 1970's Scars of Dracula starring Christopher Lee.
The Runelords. This is to be a series of films, based on David Farland's popular epic fantasy series.
Pompeii. Robert Harris' thriller will be directed by Roman Polanski and starring Orlando Bloom (coming in 2009). Sure to be a blockbuster, but will it be as good as Silence of the Lambs?
The Monkey Wrench Gang. Edward Abbey's much-beloved novel is a good short read.
The Lovely Bones. Alice Sebold's novel is being directed and screen-written by Peter Jackson, who was the producer of King Kong and Lord of the Rings! Not who I would have thought would helm this project.
The Kite Runner. If you are one of the few people who hasn't read Khaled Hosseini's book, now is the time! It will be released this fall (I guess they want an Oscar.) Interestingly, the screenwriter for this is also producing….
Ender's Game. Orson Scott Card. What took them so long to make this into a movie? Coming 2008.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. Susanna Clarke's lengthy but well-received book should be filmed next year.
And my two favorites….
Gnomeo and Juliet. Yes, the gnome version. It sounds so bad that I might actually have to watch this one. But I'll wait for the video.
Atlas Shrugged. To be released as early as 2009 and supposedly starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. For those of you who don't know, Brad Pitt is Browsers' official movie-based-on-the-book idol.

If you're curious as to what other movies are forthcoming, just ask! We have a list we've compiled from various news sources. Gerry is stock-piling first editions of Pompeii in hopes it will skyrocket in price, so bring your copy in!

NEW ARRIVALS

Here's just a few recent acquisitions. A few are partly in keeping with the "non-book" theme

1. Star Wars chapter books. A sizeable stack of these are currently in the Albany store, but hurry, they won't last! (These also came in with some adult Star Wars books -- but those are as elusive as the kids' books.) And if you like Star Wars, then be sure to read the last paragraph of the newsletter.

2. Books on CD. Both stores have gotten in some recent titles, including the latest from Dean Koontz, Michael Connelly, Khaled Hosseini, and Clive Cussler.

3. The Body Snatchers. Jack Finney. The movie version of this book (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) caused me more nightmares as a kid than anything else. The first edition of this book was actually a 25-cent Dell paperback. $25

4. The Blottentots and How to Make Them. John Prosper Carmel. Fourteen years before the famous Rorsach ink-blot test was created, Carmel created this whimsical book of ink-blot creatures accompanied by silly rhymes. $50

And a few regular ol' books:

5. Behind Bars: A Panorama of Prisons Through the Ages. Peter Kent. As the parent of two small children, I can tell you that interesting history books are hard to find in picture book form. This one is a great theme that will be of interest to all children (or, at least, to my 3-year old daughter, who frequently asks me when I'm driving her around "Where's the jail?"), busy and funny pictures reminiscent of Where's Waldo?, and text that's neither too lengthy or too dumbed-down. $7.50

6. The Brothers K. David James Duncan. Signed first edition. $50.

8. Atlas of Oregon Lakes. Daniel M. Johnson et al. Photos, maps, text for 202 lakes. $15

7. And three small collections that just came in this morning:
A. Folklore/mythology (Corvallis)
B. Native American (Albany)
C. Christian (Torrey, Murray, Ironside, Spurgeon) (Albany)

Oops, I've been forgetting the wants list in the past couple of newsletters. If you have these books, bring them in!

3. Artemis Fowl: Lost Colony. Colfer, pb
4. Dreams of My Father. Obama

7. Searchlight Cookbook from 1944-1946.
8. The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton
9. The Stars My Destination. Bester
10. The E-Myth and The E-Myth Revisited. Gerber

THIS NEWSLETTER IS NEVER-ENDING

One more fun thing, then I'll leave you alone. One of our customers has compiled a chronological listing of all Star Wars books, so you can read them in the order they happen, rather than the order in which they were published. A great resource for the true Star Wars fan. We've posted it online at www.browsersbookstore.com/starwars.html

Remember to drive safe on the 4th, or just stay home and read some books. Enjoy!
