The Count of Monte Cristo.
Published by Thomas Crowell, 1894.
I love reading classics in old bindings. I’ve owned three sets of Monte Cristo for years, and have finally decided that I could live with just two, so I’m putting this one up for sale. What can I say about this book that you don’t already know? It’s awesome, just as fun to read today as it was when it first came out. Few classics have enjoyed as much readership as this.
This edition, published in 1894, “revised & enlarged in accordance with the standard French text,” is just a fun copy to own.
Bound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards, marbled endpapers, uncut edges except for the top, which is gilt. Frontispiece to each volume, and several b/w plate illustrations within. The books are a good size without being overly large and awkward to handle. Each volume measures 8″ x 5-1/2″ x 1-1/2″.
Previous owner’s name to first blank page, some edgewear to boards, green leather has turned tan at spines as common, light scuffing to boards, hinges beginning to be tender. Overall, very good.
