Volume 5: Poems

Volumes 7-8: Criticisms

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott

This is a beautiful set of Edgar Allan Poe bound in full blue bonded leather with giltwork on spine panels. The set is illustrated with 24 photogravure illustrations. (The photogravure process is considered perhaps the best method of printing images.)

Undated, though circa 1900-1910, this is a set to be cherished.

It came to us in good shape overal, but we’ve had volumes 1 and 5 touched up by a professional book restorer, and now these books are ready for another century of service! Very good condition with owner’s stamps to front endpapers and title pages, restored upper hinge of the cover of volume one and restored internal front hinge of volume 5. Text is unmarked, bindings are solid, illustrations are clean.

Pages are gilt on top edge and uncut on others. Some pages unopened. The plate illustration of the Pit & the Pendulum has a short tear that does not intrude into image. There may be other slight wear, but overall this set is a keeper.

My theory is that your personal library should have the coolest editions of the classics that you can find. My own section of classic literature is filled with illustrated editions, fine bindings, beautiful sets, etc. The set we have for sale here is a mix of all of three!

The covers are a deep midnight blue, almost black. All gilt is still shiny. These are a comfortable reading size, as each book measures 7-1/4″ tall by 4-3/4″ wide and a little over an inch thick.
