Black History Month reprise

Part of the reason I got this Instagram plug-in for the website was to share “collections” that are assembled over time on IG. Some of the first themed posts we did were for 2017 Black History Month.

Browse through these photos to see some of the books we highlighted. There was a bit of serendipity working for us at the time, because we happened to buy a first edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin during this Black History Month.

Although a few of the books pictured were historically important contributions by white authors, the other big theme for these posts were literary contributions by African American authors.

September 2017 note: apparently, the search function for Instagram doesn’t keep much history, and nothing appears here any more! Well, follow us on Instagram and see what we do next year!

“I was trying to communicate an idea; I was trying to paint a very urban landscape. I was trying to make paintings different from the paintings that I saw a lot of at the time, which were mostly minimal, and they were highbrow and alienating, and I wanted to make very direct paintings that most people would feel the emotion behind when they saw them.” - Jean-Michel Basquiat

Today In History

Barack Obama the 44th president of the United States and the first African American commander-in-chief. He served two terms, in 2008 and 2012.

The son of parents from Kenya and Kansas, Obama was born August 4, 1961 in Hawaii.

Obama attended Punahou Academy, where he excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. As one of only three Black students at the school, he became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African American.

He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. After serving on the Illinois State Senate, he was elected a U.S. senator representing Illinois in 2004. He and wife Michelle Obama have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

In February 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

On November 4, 2008, Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain, 52.9 percent to 45.7 percent, to win election as the 44th president of the United States—and the first African American to hold this office.
