JANE AUSTEN’S NOVELS
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1892
This is one of the best items in our inventory.
Probably no other author has had quite the appeal of Jane Austen–both in terms of how widely read her books are, and for how long they have been loved.
We get people in the store all the time asking for “old copies” of Jane Austen. Usually, they have to be happy with a copy from, say, the 1970s, because vintage copies (i.e., before WWII) of her books just don’t last on the shelf for more than a day!
This set, however, was published in 1892. That date is huge, because not only is it over a century old, but it’s also from the same century in which she was originally published. These really have the feel of an antique set.
The twelve volumes are bound in full cloth, with top edge gilt, floral endpapers, and an engraved frontispiece on thicker paper for each volume. The books are:
Sense and Sensibility (2 volumes)
Price and Prejudice (2 volumes)
Mansfield Park (2 volumes)
Emma (2 volumes)
Lady Susan–The Watsons–with a memoir
Letters of Jane Austen
The set is in very good condition overall. The spines are faded a little–not quite as deep of a dark red color; slightly cocked. I had a book restoration expert do a little work on the hinges of a few of the books–they are nice & strong now, and ready for years and years of reading. Small chip at head of “Emma”: see close-up photo.
The books have removable mylar sleeves–they were taken off for most of the photos, but the second picture of the full set shows them on–they are just reflective in photography.
This is an heirloom set, one that you and your family will treasure.
