Store News

Happy holidays from all of us at Browsers’! We’re busy trying to keep the shelves full, which is sometimes a challenge during December. Just remember to ask us if there’s anything you’re looking for because we’re pretty good about knowing where stuff is!

New Arrivals

This month we purchased a big batch of cookbooks, an interesting group of gun books (Albany store), a scientist’s working library (Corvallis store), and some other smaller collections.

Rehabilitations and Other Essays

C.S. Lewis
London: Oxford University Press, 1939

First edition of C.S. Lewis’ sixth book, written a full decade before the Narnia series came out. Between his popular books, like Narnia & “The Screwtape Letters,” and his association with the Inklings, Lewis’ standing as an important 20th century author is sure to be long-lasting.

This copy is in very good to near fine condition with some discoloration to endpapers. Dust jacket is in good condition with a chip to front & rear panels, moderate toning to spine panel, and short tears and light soiling. $250

My Best Games of Chess, 1908-1923

Alexander Alekhin
London: G. Bell & Sons, 1928

Alekhin became the fourth world chess champion in 1927 after defeating Jose Raoul Capablanca (whose 1921 book “Chess Fundamentals” and later book “Last Lectures” we purchased along with this–see the Corvallis store.)

A very good copy in green cloth boards. Second printing. $40

Midwifery Illustrated

J.P. Maygrier, M.D.
New-York: Harper & Brothers, 1835

A complete guide to early 19th-century midwifery. Mostly concerned with delivery, including the various problems as well as Caesarian section procedures, this also has medical information on everything from the development of the fetus to nursing the newborn.

Illustrated with 82 engravings. The fold-out pictured is typical of the amount of toning & foxing most of the plates have. Plate 81, showing the circulatory system between fetus and placenta in color is another folding plate, and it is torn along crease, both parts present.

Full leather binding with moisture stain along front edge, front joint is fragile, and there is a one inch chip to bottom of spine. Inscription dated July 21st, 1835 says that the previous owner bought this book for $6.75. Good to fair condition overall, but the textblock is solidly bound, and the pages unmarked. $125

11 Boxes of Physics

A recently retired scientist did a major clearing out of his home office, hooray! A huge influx of books, mostly relating to physics, dating from the 1930s to the 2010s. These are “in process” and will be appearing on the shelves over the next few days & weeks.

These are in the Corvallis store even though we may run into a space problem. Check the science aisle, though! Prices will mostly range $5 – $25.

Southern Cook Book

Lillie S. Lustig; S. Claire Sondheim; Sarah Rensel.
Reading, PA: Culinary Arts Press, 1935.

The cooking collection we purchased had lots of regional cookbooks–both American and international locales–so if you’re looking for some new flavors to explore, you might want to start browsing our cookbook sections.

This is the first edition of a popular book that has been reprinted over many decades. I flipped through it looking for a recipe for dinner a couple of days ago, but had neither opossum nor turtle in the fridge, so used a different book. Near fine in very good dust jacket. Stapled paperback, 48 pages. $20
G.I. Joe

Ernie Pyle
New York: Overseas Editions, 1944

The front cover reads: “This edition of an American book is made available in various countries only until normal free publishing, interrupted by Axis aggression, can be reestablished.”

A neat edition, combining parts of “Here Is Your War” and “Brave Men,” that would have been distributed to soldiers fighting in Europe. Some wear and short tears to head of spine. Good to very good condition overall. $12

Buda’s Wagon: A Brief History of the Car Bomb

Mike Davis
London: Verso, 2007.

A good gift for “that person” (we all know one of those–hahaha!!) Fine in fine jacket. $8

Emily of New Moon

L.M. Montgomery
New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1923

The first book of the Emily trilogy, which Montgomery started after the conclusion of her Avonlea series.

We don’t often see older copies of this series; and this is the first American edition, featuring a color frontispiece by M.L. Kirk (same image as seen on the front cover.)

Generally a nice book, the main flaws are that the front endpaper has been removed and the spine lettering is darkened. Front cover is very good with just a faint crease to the pasted-on painting extending about two inches from the right side (see photo.) Clean pages, solid binding: an enjoyable copy. $50
Haiku. Four volumes.

R.H. Blyth
Tokyo: Hokuseido, 1960

The complete set of the definitive work on Japanese haiku. These are 1960 reprints, which is the 7th printing of the first volume, and lower printings of subsequent volumes. Here’s my own composition:

A four volume set:
It’s complete with dust jackets.
Christmas coming soon.

The books are very good to near fine, only flaw noted is owner’s stamp to first pages. Dust jackets are good overall with some wear & tear; now in mylar. Sold as a set, $200.

South with Endurance: Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917. The Photographs of Frank Hurley.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 2001

I’m not convinced my sales-pitch-haiku is going to do much good, so let’s stick with something tried and true: coffee table books!

This large format book of Shackleton’s Endurance expedition is both beautiful and terrifying. Near fine in like jacket. $25
We will be closing early on the 24th and 31st, and closed all day on the 25th and January 1st; otherwise, we’re open normal hours. Thanks for another great year, and we look forward to 2020!

Enjoy the browsing,
